Traditional postpatrum care with a modern twist
Hi, I'm Alicia!
I'm a new mom and I came into this work after a traumatic surgical birth followed by severe postpartum preeclampsia and postpartum depression. I severely underestimated the postpartum period and had no preparation whatsoever. Even with my amazing husband and dozens of my family members around to help, I was deeply unhappy and couldn't get through one day without crying. I was in such shock of the magnitude of the situation and wondered how all the women before me got through this turbulent time. I realize now that the mother needs so much more care, reassurance and recovery time...so she can then care for her child.
Our society paints a false picture of motherhood of it only being beautiful and amazing, which it totally is...but there are very dark aspects to postpartum too. Things like anxiety, depression, grief, shame, sadness, ambivalence. All those things are ok! Modern motherhood is HARD. Our culture minimizes the motherhood experience leaving us feeling isolated and pushed out during the most transformative, sacred and vulnerable time of our lives.
The "it takes a village" sentient no longer applies to our culture in its individualistic ways, There are no more villages or communities in the US that surround the new mother with care, nourishment and support. To care for the mother is to care for the baby.
It takes a village to usher a woman into motherhood as well. In the past, a new mother would be surrounded by a circle of caring, doting woman comprised of aunts, sisters, mothers & neighbors for weeks into the babies new life. I help you re-create your village and organize your fourth trimester before baby comes to allow the birthing person to really focus on healing, bonding and adjustment to the fourth trimester
I hope to help empower new moms and families by nurturing and educating.
Postpartum is forever in my opinion! Categorized as being three months after giving birth, newer research suggests postpartum actually lasts for 7 years now where you are still experiencing hormonal and mental shifts.
